# Breach cost estimator

> The breach cost estimator gives a rough, illustrative figure for what one data breach could cost a business like yours. Pick your sector, set your annual turnover and say how strong your security is. It's for owners and finance leads who need a starting number for a budget conversation, in under a minute.

The estimate is worked out in your browser as you move the controls. There is no form to submit and nothing is saved. It is an illustrative estimate from a simple model, not a quote, an insurance figure or advice.

## Inputs

1. **Your sector**: one of 15 sectors, from agriculture and food production to transport and logistics.
2. **Annual turnover**: a slider from £1m to £1bn.
3. **How strong is your security today?** Weak (little in place, patching when there's time), Average (the basics, checked now and then) or Strong (patched on a schedule, tested, watched).

## What you get back

- **Estimated cost of one breach**, and what share of your turnover that is.
- **An impact level**: Low, Moderate, High or Critical, based on the estimate as a share of turnover (above 2% Moderate, above 5% High, above 10% Critical).
- **A suggested yearly security budget** of 1% of turnover, for context.

## Bring that number down

The quickest wins are knowing what you have open online, fixing the flaws criminals are using first and spotting fake websites using your name. - **See what you have open online**: hosts, open ports, services and certificates, and what changed since your last scan.
- **Fix the riskiest flaws first**: every flaw in your software scored 0 to 100, led by evidence it's being exploited.
- **Spot fake sites using your name**: we keep watching for lookalike domains, and warn you before your certificates expire.

## Questions people ask

**How is the breach cost calculated?**
The calculator uses risk factors for your industry, combined with your annual turnover and how strong your security is. High-risk industries such as healthcare and finance have higher multipliers, and your security (weak, average or strong) adjusts the final estimate.

**What does the suggested security budget represent?**
The suggested budget is 1% of your annual turnover, a common rule of thumb for cyber security spending. It should cover security tools, people, training and the ability to respond to an incident.

**Why do different industries have different risk levels?**
Industries handle different kinds of sensitive data and face different rules. Healthcare and finance usually face higher breach costs because of strict compliance requirements such as PCI DSS, the risk of identity theft and higher regulatory fines.

**Is anything I enter sent or stored?**
No. The estimate is worked out in your browser as you move the controls. There is no form to submit and nothing is saved.

**How can I lower my real risk?**
Know what you have open to the internet, fix the flaws criminals are using first and watch for fake websites using your name. Precursor Intelligence tracks the software you use, ranks its flaws by evidence of real attacks, maps what you expose to the internet and watches for lookalike domains using your name.
