## What is CVE-2014-0226? In plain terms

It can be attacked from anywhere on the internet without logging in. If it works, the attacker can read some data, change some data and slow it down.

### The official description

Race condition in the mod_status module in the Apache HTTP Server before 2.4.10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow), or possibly obtain sensitive credential information or execute arbitrary code, via a crafted request that triggers improper scoreboard handling within the status_handler function in modules/generators/mod_status.c and the lua_ap_scoreboard_worker function in modules/lua/lua_request.c.

### What kind of flaw is it?

- CWE-362: Concurrent Execution using Shared Resource with Improper Synchronization ('Race Condition')

### How an attack on it works

- Where an attacker can be: Anywhere on the internet
- How hard it is to pull off: Some conditions needed
- Login needed first: No login needed
- What an attacker gets: Can read some data, change some data and slow it down

Severity vector: `AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P`

### How Precursor Intelligence ranks it

CVE-2014-0226 scores **62 out of 100 (Medium)**, with the action "Plan remediation".

Every published flaw gets a risk score from 0 to 100, kept up to date as the evidence changes. Four things go into the score, from the one that counts most to the ones that count less:

- Evidence it is being exploited: biggest factor
- How severe it is: strong factor
- How widely exposed it is: smaller factor
- Threat activity around it: smaller factor

85 and above is Critical. Anything confirmed as exploited is always marked for an emergency patch, whatever its score. When this flaw matches software you track, it lands in your list with its score and the reasons behind it.
