Versions of 3.x prior to 3.2.4 and 4.x prior to 4.2.0 have a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) issue. The `\u002Fproxy` endpoint accepts a `host` path segment in the format `\u002Fproxy\u002F`. When this endpoint is called with an invalid `host` value, `jupyter-server-proxy` replies with a response that includes the value of `host`, without sanitization [2]. A third-party actor can leverage this by sending a phishing link with an invalid `host` value containing custom JavaScript to a user. When the user clicks this phishing link, the browser renders the response of `GET \u002Fproxy\u002F`, which runs the custom JavaScript contained in `host` set by the actor. As any arbitrary JavaScript can be run after the user clicks on a phishing link, this issue permits extensive access to the user's JupyterLab instance for an actor. Patches are included in versions 4.2.0 and 3.2.4. As a workaround, server operators who are unable to upgrade can disable the `jupyter-server-proxy` extension.","Jupyter Server Proxy allows users to run arbitrary external processes alongside their notebook server and provide authenticated web access to them. The attacker could transfer private information, such as cookies that may include session information, from the victim's machine to the attacker. The attacker could send malicious requests to a web site on behalf of the victim, which could be especially dangerous to the site if the victim has administrator privileges to manage that site. Phishing attacks could be used to emulate trusted web sites and trick the victim into entering a password, allowing the attacker to compromise the victim's account on that web site. Finally, the script could exploit a vulnerability in the web browser itself possibly taking over the victim's machine, sometimes referred to as \"drive-by hacking.\"\nIn many cases, the attack can be launched without the victim even being aware of it. Even with careful users, attackers frequently use a variety of methods to encode the malicious portion of the attack, such as URL encoding or Unicode, so the request looks less suspicious.","Stable","Base","Simple",{"id":85,"name":86,"description":87,"extendedDescription":88,"status":89,"abstraction":90,"structure":83},"CWE-116","Improper Encoding or Escaping of Output","The product prepares a structured message for communication with another component, but encoding or escaping of the data is either missing or done incorrectly. As a result, the intended structure of the message is not preserved.","Improper encoding or escaping can allow attackers to change the commands that are sent to another component, inserting malicious commands instead.\nMost products follow a certain protocol that uses structured messages for communication between components, such as queries or commands. These structured messages can contain raw data interspersed with metadata or control information. For example, \"GET \u002Findex.html HTTP\u002F1.1\" is a structured message containing a command (\"GET\") with a single argument (\"\u002Findex.html\") and metadata about which protocol version is being used (\"HTTP\u002F1.1\").\nIf an application uses attacker-supplied inputs to construct a structured message without properly encoding or escaping, then the attacker could insert special characters that will cause the data to be interpreted as control information or metadata. Consequently, the component that receives the output will perform the wrong operations, or otherwise interpret the data incorrectly.","Draft","Class",2,false,[],{"title":95,"metaDescription":96,"keywords":97,"canonicalUrl":98,"structuredData":99},"What is CVE-2024-35225?
