Protobuf-Java vulnerabilitiesRanked by how likely they are to be used.
Protobuf-Java is made by Google. We track 5 published vulnerabilities in it, across 85 versions. None of them is on the list of flaws known to be exploited today. If you run Protobuf-Java, keep it on a version the vendor still supports.
We keep watching the known-exploited list.
Which Protobuf-Java vulnerabilities are being exploited?
This is the list that matters most: flaws criminals are using now.
None of Protobuf-Java's published vulnerabilities is on the list of flaws known to be exploited today. We keep watching that list.
Which Protobuf-Java flaws are most likely to be used?
Ranked by the latest exploit-likelihood forecast: the chance each flaw is used in an attack in the next 30 days. A high severity score on its own doesn't tell you that. Flaws shared by many other makers' products are left out.
- 2.8%CVE-2024-7254High
Any project that parses untrusted Protocol Buffers data containing an arbitrary number of nested groups / series of SGROUP tags can corrupted by exceeding the stack limit i.e.
- 1.7%CVE-2021-22569Medium
An issue in protobuf-java allowed the interleaving of com.google.protobuf.UnknownFieldSet fields in such a way that would be processed out of order.
- 1.3%CVE-2022-3171High
A parsing issue with binary data in protobuf-java core and lite versions prior to 3.21.7, 3.20.3, 3.19.6 and 3.16.3 can lead to a denial of service attack.
- 1.0%CVE-2022-3509High
A parsing issue similar to CVE-2022-3171, but with textformat in protobuf-java core and lite versions prior to 3.21.7, 3.20.3, 3.19.6 and 3.16.3 can lead to a denial of service attack.
- 0.7%CVE-2022-3510High
A parsing issue similar to CVE-2022-3171, but with Message-Type Extensions in protobuf-java core and lite versions prior to 3.21.7, 3.20.3, 3.19.6 and 3.16.3 can lead to a denial of service attack.

1 new flaw affects software Acme tracks
Any project that parses untrusted Protocol Buffers data containing an arbitrary number of nested groups / series of SGROUP tags can corrupted by exceeding the stack limit i.e. StackOverflow. Parsing nested groups as unknown fields with DiscardUnknownFieldsParser or Java Protobuf Lite parser, or against Protobuf map fields, creates unbounded recursions that can be abused by an attacker.
